Mumbai: Various schemes are being implemented by the central and state governments to ensure that the education of meritorious students is not hampered due to the difficult economic situation. Meritorious students from economically weaker sections studying in class VIII are given a scholarship of Rs 12,000 per year through the central government scheme. For this scholarship scheme, the State Examination Council will conduct an examination on December 21 across the state this year. The name of this examination is NMMS.

Through the NMMS scholarship examination, financially weak and talented students of class VIII are provided financial assistance for their education from class IX to XII. A scholarship of Rs. 1,000 per month, i.e. Rs. 12,000 per year, is provided for four years from class IX to XII.

The application process for this exam has started from September 12. Interested and eligible students can apply online on the National Scholarship (NMMS) portal. To avail the scholarship, students should have secured at least 55 percent marks (50 percent for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) in class VII. Also, the annual income of the parents should not exceed Rs 3 lakh 35 thousand.

Where to apply?

First, one has to register on the NMMS portal. Then, one has to complete the online application by attaching the necessary documents for the scholarship. It is mandatory to attach the income certificate of the Tehsildar for this application. Moreover, the students should have passed the mental ability and academic aptitude test. Students of class VIII from any government, government-approved private aided school, local government institution in the state can apply. However, their parents' income should be less than Rs 3 lakh 50 thousand.

Results will be out in February.

The State Examination Council will conduct the examination across the state on December 21 this year. The results of this examination are likely to be declared in February. If the scholarship is received, students will get financial assistance for their education from class IX to XII and will be encouraged to pursue higher education.
